Mile High Run Club

Final and immediate boarding call… I repeat… Final and immediate boarding call. Grab your sneakers, headphones, and cell, and you’re ready for the run of a lifetime.

For those of you who are just starting to read my posts, my prior blog focused in on super exciting exercise classes in Ann Arbor. But because I totally get the whole “independence” ordeal that our parents keep mentioning (sucks to be a senior), I have dedicated this blog to outdoor running; the most affordable of workout methods.

People always ask me, how are you motivated to run outside in Ann Arbor? Aren’t you bored of passing the Michigan theatre and Amers on every run? And the answer is yes, I do, and that would bore me too. But recently, I’ve found the best way to keep on moving: Mapmyrun.

That’s right. This app will save your life. But seriously…I can thank this app for saving me from running into the wilderness that we call Michigan too many times. Mapmyrun has many benefits that will help you maximize your running experience. Sponsored by Under Armour, one of Mapmyrun’s best abilities includes it’s database of past runner routes. In other words, should you want to change up the scenery, you have the ability to click in on anyone’s past routes (mileage listed), and wallah! A new running route is on your way.

I also love Mapmyrun because of its automated messages. When you’re trying to sprint 2 miles, it’s often difficult to look down on your phone and check how fast you need to sprint to beat your time. With Mapmyrun, the application will shout out (over your music) the distance you’ve traveled, the time it’s taken to travel that far, and the average speed you’ve run at (if you’ve run more than 1 mile).

Whether you’re trying to beat your speed, or ready for a new view, Mapmyrun is the app for you. Download it in the Apple store for free and get ready to up your miles (I hope that the recency effect applies, so that you remember to download the application if nothing else!) (Babin/Harris, p148). Now, are you ready for takeoff?

PS: Yes, I am trying to persuade you to run, changing your attitudes about running to make running appear more favorable (Babin/Harris, p138).

Read Tom’s Guide to learn more about the benefits of this application, and learn about other similar applications that might appeal to you:

  1. Kelly, I'll be the first to say that I am definitely in your same boat! I am a huge advocate of running outside (for some reason I prefer it far, far more than running inside on a treadmill) and I easily tire my campus routes. So I love your article! I had no idea that Mapmyrun allows you to view routes that other people have ran as well as shows the mileage. This is a great tool for the many runners at the university.

I do have a question and was wondering if you had any recommendations. I also hear a lot of things about the Nike running application. People seem to find Nike as such a reliable brand and they prefer that app. I was wondering what the pros and cons of the different running apps were, and how runners might be persuaded to download one over the other. My attitude towards running is that I don't want to think about where I have to go and how far I am going-I just want to run my route and know I ran my goal of X miles. What do you think is the best app for me?

I love working out (after I get myself to actually do it...). Workouts are a great release of stress for me and keep me on a good schedule throughout long weeks of school and socializing. Aside from running and Ann Arbor classes, perhaps you can share other easy and every day ways to incorporate exercise into our busy, broke college lives. Also, I was wondering if you knew the minimum amount of working out we should be doing a week.

Thank you for the information about Mapmyrun and I look forward to reading your next post!

  2. Hi Kelly,

I agree, running outside is great! I am in MRun (the running club at Michigan) and we use Mapmyrun to plan all of our routes. It's a really cool app! I used to also use Mapmyrun when I ran by myself, but last year I finally decided to invest in a GPS watch. It's great because you can see your current pace and total time and distance at any moment, since the watch is easily view-able while running. It's also a lot less bulky than carrying a phone! I knew a lot of people in MRun that had the Garmin Forerunner 10, and since I share many goals and interests with people in that group, it influenced me to purchase that same brand and model of GPS watch (Babin/Harris 148). Here is a link to the watch on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerunner-Watch-Pink-White/dp/B0090C7A5C
It's a bit pricey, but personally, I use mine almost every day, so I consider it a great investment.
